Introducing our series, in conversation with. Join us as we chat to studio members and talk about our latest projects, offering a new perspective and allowing the key individuals behind the work to provide a focused lens.
In our latest edition, we chat to Design Director Paul O’Brien, who played a key role in the recently launched work for Dolmio.
What was the brief?
Dolmio came to us for a complete brand refresh in order to appeal to a younger audience and provide them with the tools to communicate in a flexible, exciting and engaging way, ensuring they are able to maintain their position as the market leader.
What was unique about this project?
By introducing speech bubbles, born out of the counter of the ‘D’ in the brand mark, Dolmio can communicate directly to their consumers in a personable and fun way – something most brands don’t have the ability to do.
Describe the work in three words?
Energetic, charismatic, and progressive.
Which visual are you most proud of? Why?
The ‘MMM’ billboard, because it’s fun and intriguing whilst visually representing the brands creative principles of ‘overflowing yumminess’, big hearted oomph, and cheeky little touches.
Why did you use the red dot of the exclamation point as a graphic asset?
The red dot frames our ‘YEAH’ moments, acting as a lens into the world of Dolmio’s tasty meals.
This is your first project as a Design Director – what was the biggest reward and challenge throughout the project?
The biggest reward is the amount of traction and positive responses the work has already received! The biggest challenge was the pressure of delivering a great end-result for one of the country’s most loved brands.
What was the inspiration behind the photoshoot shots?
We have a tactile product here – the jars are meant to be held, unscrewed, and poured! So, by shooting our new packs in the hands of the consumer in a green and red environment, we were able to capture the playful nature of Dolmio and showcase our new branding in a fun and engaging way.
